Roll Of The Week

This listing will be updated once a week on Fridays. I hope to keep all new selections here permanently. I hope you enjoy listening to the recordings as much as I have enjoyed making them.

The Saint Louis Blues
Q-R-S Word Roll 4926
pb J. Larwence Cook
Is this Blues or Boogie-Woogie? In any case, it is quite good. November 16, 2001 MP3
Q-R-S Word Roll XP-362-C
Fats Waller Medley No. 9
Boogie Woogie
Arr. by J. Lawrence Cook
pb Fats Waller
A wonderful roll, filled with some great Boogie Woogie piano playing. Yes, a player piano can play Boogie Woogie! November 16, 2001 MP3
Q-R-S Recordo Roll M-610680
Tea For Two
pb J. Lawrence Cook
Does anyone know this number? It might catch on someday! (-:

I think it holds the record for "most easily remembered melody." (-: Yet it is a delight and still going strong.

If you don't know this song, well, well then, I just don't know what to say!

Q-R-S Word Roll 2734
Memory Lane
pb Phil Ohman (Kortlander)
A lovely and haunting waltz from the early 1920s. This arrangement is a little up tempo and has some typical '20s phrasing. November 30, 2001 MP3
Q-R-S Word Roll 172
Poor Butterfly
One of the greatest hits of the 1920s, and this version is a wonderful interpretation. November 30, 2001 MP3
Q-R-S Celebrity Roll CEL-121-B
Gershwin Medley
pb Liberace
A very nice roll, filled with all kinds of surprises, drama, and truly great piano playing. It is almost eight minutes long too! December 7, 2001 MP3
Q-R-S Word Roll 1553-A
Santa Claus Time
pb J. Lawrence Cook
A delightful QRS Christmas roll. It has been around for 50+ years now and is still for sale by QRS. This roll is also filled with all kinds of surprises, as well as special sound effects, and some general nuttiness in the middle. December 14, 2001 MP3
Merry Christmas!!! (from QRS)
pb Frank Milne
and J. Lawrence Cook
Here are three very well-worn and old QRS rolls. There is what looks liked candied apple on one of them (with wrinkles) and one has some illegible scribbles in crayon on it. "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" goes off track for a moment, but no matter, it's a great song. Pianists are Cook and Milne. Song are (in the order played): White Christmas, Frosty The Snowman, All I Want For Christmas... I left in the reroll sounds and end of roll signal for realism.  December 21, 2001 MP3
Q-R-S Word Roll 4892
The Perfect Song
pb Max Kortlander
Perfect? Well, I did find myself humming it more than once. This is a very early Fox Trot roll, probably from 1919 or 1920.  December 28, 2001 MP3
Q-R-S Word Roll 9360
Beyond The Blue Horizon
pb ??
A nice "Art Deco" roll with which to start the new year.  January 4, 2002 MP3
Duo-Art Fox Trot and Song Roll 1753
Have You Forgotten?
pb Henry Lange
A lively old roll, I tried to give it a little extra "umph" with the footpump; which I think shows that the pneumatic player piano can be an extremely expressive musical instrument. The short bursts of loudness are me. The microphone didn't like it, but that will change soon.  January 11, 2002 MP3
Duo-Art Fox Trot 0915 / 0112
I Wake Up Smiling / Someday My Prince Will Come
pb Adam Carroll / Robert Farquhar
Art Deco era waltzes. Very nice. Also, this is the first posting with my new microphones. Hope you like it.  January 19, 2002 MP3
Duo-Art Fox Trot 0630
Sweethearts On Parade
pb Constance Merring
A romantic march, if you can imagine such a thing. Don't imagine it, just play it! (-: There is also quite a bit of humor in this roll.  January 26, 2002 MP3
Duo-Art 713194
Who (Stole My Heart Away?)
pb Moran & Milne
Who? (Stole My Heart Away? Who? Makes Me Dream All Day? Who? Means My Happiness?...Who? No One But You!...) Frank Milne with one of his better roll arrangements.  February 2, 2002 MP3
Ampico-Artigraphic 51175-F
Die Lorelei
pb Marguerite Volavy
I honestly have to say that this piece reminds me of the World Trade Center attack -- before, during, and after, over a span of years. 911 happens at 2:40. What comes after is quite beautiful and filled with hope, even more so than the prequal. We will recover and rebuild, but we will also never forget. "The phoenix shall rise from the ashes."  February 10, 2002 MP3
QRS Word Roll No. 11020
Minnie's Yoo Hoo
pb George Bogatko
This artfully arranged roll really brings out the articulation in the Simplex upright. It is quite easy to "pick out" the individual notes. It goes off into "player piano-land" at about 1:53.  February 16, 2002 MP3
88 Note Roll
Miserere du Trovatore
music by L. M. Gottschalk
This is one of my oldest rolls as well as one of my favorites. It is simple and well played. Also, there is some good sforzando at various points, and much of it is anything but miserable. Some of you may recall Allan Jones singing this in the last scene of the movie, "A Night At The Opera."  February 22, 2002 MP3
